Before & After
“Working with Prism Energy Services has been a great experience. From initial meetings through project completion, the Prism team was cooperative, accessible, and eager to make things go smoothly. HWRSD is delighted and proud of the improved aesthetics and energy efficiency that the LED retrofits bring to Stony Hill School, as well as the other schools across our district.”

About Stony Hill School
The Stony Hill School is an elementary school that is part of the Hampden-Wilbraham Regional School District. The HWRSD is a fully accredited Pre-K-12 public school district, comprised of seven schools that educates approximately 3,200 students. In a 2014 census and state education data report by NerdWallet, the HWRSD ranked 24 out of 266 Massachusetts school districts for the best schools in affordable communities. Stony Hill School’s Mission Statement: “At Stony Hill, we see kids as full of possibilities and potential. By instilling in them a passion for learning, we develop their persistence to succeed and give them opportunities to shine.”
The Challenge
The Hampden-Wilbraham School District reached out to Prism Energy Services to conduct a lighting evaluation on several of the schools. The Stony Hill School was one of the most comprehensive projects. The project consisted of interior LED lighting retrofits in the cafeteria and gym, exterior LED lighting retrofits, and area light retrofits in the parking lot. The challenge was upgrading the existing metal halide and high-pressure sodium lighting to more energy efficient LEDs.
The Prism Solution
Prism worked with the school district’s maintenance coordinator to identify and install more energy efficient lighting solutions. The cafeteria and gym lights were retrofitted from 250W metal halide pendant mounts to 86W LED high bays. On the exterior, a variety of 70W metal halide sconces, 70W canopies, 100W high-pressure sodium wallpacks, and 250W spider mount poles were all replaced with energy efficient LEDs. The new LEDs will decrease the school’s energy consumption from 43,473 kWh to 10,243 kWh, an energy reduction of 76%.
The Bottom Line
Prism helped the school reduce its energy consumption by 33,230 kWh, saving an estimated $5,462 in annual energy costs. With the long lifespan of LED lighting, the school will also save just under $5,000 in avoided maintenance costs. Most importantly, the new LEDs will significantly improve light levels, enhancing safety throughout and all around the school.
