COMPANY HISTORY
Saint Joseph’s Abbey is a cloistered Roman monastery set in Spencer, Massachusetts. The monks live a life of silence and solitude. With a history of over 900 years, the monks and the Abbey are a story of perseverance and faith.
THE CHALLENGE
The organization supports itself through the sale of their Trappist Preserves. Despite the success of their preserves, the Abbey wanted to reduce their electricity bills and become a more sustainable organization.
THE PRISM SOLUTION
The brothers reached out to Prism Energy Services and connected with the National Grid Small Business Direct Install Program. Prism helped Saint Joseph’s Abbey install high efficiency lighting systems and lighting controls to reduce the Abbey’s monthly operating costs and improve their lighting efficiency.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The energy efficiency improvements have made a big impact on the Abbey’s bottom line. The total project cost was estimated at $25,100. Prism worked with National Grid to provide the Abbey incentives on the total installation cost of the project. The Abbey received a 70% incentive on the job, reducing the cost to only $7,100. With estimated savings of $10,000 from the more energy efficient lighting and lighting controls, the payback period was less than one year.
